APPLICATION FOR VARIATION OF AUTHORISATION
NEW SEWAGE TREATMENT WORKS ARDERSIER
Notice is hereby given, in accordance with Regulation 13 of the above Regulations, that an application has been made to the
Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) by Scottish Water to vary water use licence number CAR/L/1001681 authorising
the carrying on of controlled activities at, near or in connection with a new Sewage Treatment Works, as follows: New Sewage
Treatment Works Ardersier.

Additional discharge of 2807 m3 per day of final sewage effluent – this would be an increase to 3542 m/3 per day. In addition
to receiving Biological Treatment all final sewage effluent would be subject to Ultraviolet Disinfection prior to discharge.
This application proposes that the final effluent will discharge at a new location.

SEPA considers that the above change(s) to controlled activity has or is likely to have an impact on the water environment.
Other activities are included in the application that are considered not likely to have such an impact and are not listed
here. Details of all the activities applied for can be seen in the application.
Any person affected or likely to be affected by, or having an interest in, the application may make representations to SEPA
in writing within 28 days beginning with the date of this advertisement, at the following address, quoting reference number
CAR/L/1001681

A copy of the application and any accompanying information may be inspected free of charge, at the above address, between
9.30 am and 4.30 pm Monday to Friday (except local and national holidays). Alternatively, the application may be viewed on
SEPA’s website at: www.sepa.org.uk/about_us/consultations.aspx
A statement of the reasons for SEPA’s assessment that the above controlled activity or activities is likely to have an impact
on the water environment will be made available by SEPA on request by contacting the above office.
Written representations received by SEPA within 28 days of this advertisement will be taken into consideration in determining
whether or not to grant the application. Any such representations will be placed in a public register unless the person making
them requests that they should not be. Where such a request is made SEPA will include a statement in the register indicating
that representations have been made which have been subject of such a request.
When ready to determine the application, SEPA will serve notice on any person who has made a representation within 28 days
of this advertisement, informing them of SEPA’s proposed determination and giving them the opportunity to notify the Scottish
Ministers in writing that they object to SEPA’s proposed determination within 21 days of the notice being served.
Before determining the application SEPA will:
• Assess the risk to the water environment posed by the carrying on of the activity or activities;
• Assess the indirect effects of that impact on any other aspects of the environment likely to be significantly affected;
• Consider any likely adverse social and economic effects of that impact and of any indirect environmental effects that have
been identified;
• Consider the likely environmental, social and economic benefits of the activity;
• Assess the impact of the controlled activity or activities on the interests of other users of the water environment;
• Assess what steps may be taken to ensure efficient and sustainable water use; and
• Apply and have regard to relevant legislation.
SEPA will then either grant or refuse to grant an authorisation to carry on the activity or each of the activities referred
to above and will make its decision available to the public together with the main reasons for it, the matters considered
in making it and, if granted, details of any measures that will be taken to mitigate the impact.
